Experts' Dialogue and Review Seminar: Introductory Course on Environmental Law and Governance (Online)

The Thailand Judicial Training Institute (JTI) in collaboration with USAID Wildlife Asia and United Nations Environment Programme Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP ROAP) have jointly developed a judicial curriculum entitled “Introductory Course on Environmental Law and Governance” for the Thai judiciary. The curriculum will be hosted on UNEP’s InforMEA online platform and will be an institutionalized course of JTI. The curriculum’s primary language is Thai, but an English version of the course has also been developed.

2nd Demand Reduction Workshop of International Network of Engaged Buddhists

USAID Wildlife Asia and the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) will hold the 2nd workshop at Phitsanulok City in northern Thailand. This workshop is part of social mobilization efforts that will use face-to-face channels to expand the reach of USAID Wildlife Asia’s Spiritual Beliefs campaign to decrease demand for ivory and tiger products driven by beliefs in their power to bring good luck and prevent harm. This workshop follows the first successful workshop held on October 21, 2020 and expands the participation of spiritual leaders in additional provinces in Thailand. Approximately 30 monks and nuns from various Buddhist temples in Northern Thailand will participate in this workshop. Participants will discuss wildlife trade and its relation to Buddhist teachings, and will develop an action plan to counter spiritual beliefs about wildlife products and reduce consumption of these products.

Maritime Stakeholders' Workshop on CWT

USAID Wildlife Asia and its partners--the Royal Thai Customs, United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime, TRAFFIC and WWF--are holding a Maritime Stakeholders' Workshop on “Countering wildlife trafficking and other illicit trade through Thai seaports and maritime supply chains”. This meeting will convene representatives from government agencies such as Thai Customs, Port Authority of Thailand, DNP, FD, NED and the shipping and freight sectors to identify wildlife trafficking enablers and vulnerabilities in the port/supply chain systems and operations, and the responses needed to counter them. The workshop will provide the foundation for follow up activities partly supported by specific initiatives and partly driven by public and private sector enterprises. This event is one of a series of Port/Maritime Stakeholder Workshops targeting key countries whose maritime trade chains are known to be exploited by wildlife traffickers.

ASEAN Webinar on Risks of Zoonotic Diseases Transmission from Illegal Wildlife Trade (For AMS Government Officials and Supporting Partners)

ASEAN is holding a webinar on the risks of zoonotic disease transmission from the illegal wildlife trade. Facilitated by USAID Wildlife Asia, the webinar will include the participation of experts led by former CITES Secretary-General John Scanlon. Freeland, Asian Development Bank, World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and WWF will also provide resource speakers for the webinar. The webinar will be hosted by AWG CITES WE Malaysia Chair via the Bluejeans platform. This collaboration will also produce materials, a policy brief, and recommendations on preventing pandemics from zoonotic diseases.

Roundtable meeting to review the Vietnamese CTOC training package

The Counter Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC) course was identified as a priority during a targeted needs assessment of the Vietnam People's Police Academy (PPA) undertaken by USAID Wildlife Asia. The PPA indicated that it was interested in integrating and institutionalizing relevant CTOC training materials into their curricula. This roundtable meeting with key Vietnamese law enforcement agencies is being conducted to review and discuss how to tailor the CTOC materials to the specific needs of Vietnam’s broader law enforcement community.

Zoohackathon 2020: Coding to End Wildlife Trafficking!

Zoohackathon 2020 is a global competition run by the U.S. Department of State that harnesses the power of technological innovation and the raising of public awareness to combat wildlife trafficking. It brings together coders, university students, wildlife conservation experts, zoos, and other academic and nongovernmental organizations to develop wire-frame/demo technology solution ideas over 2.5 days.  We aim to turn these solution ideas into real-world technologies that can help combat wildlife trafficking into the future.  In prior years, this competition was held in-person, but as COVID-19 has made that infeasible for 2020, we have developed the Virtual Global Zoohackathon 2020.

Vietnam National Assembly Second Dialogue

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), through the USAID Wildlife Asia project, and the Office of the National Assembly of Vietnam are bringing together top government leaders and relevant stakeholders today for a high-level dialogue with the theme “Strengthening legislation and communication to reduce demand for illegal wildlife products”. The event is the second in a series of three activities organized by the USAID Wildlife Asia project aimed at ending the illegal consumption of wildlife products in Vietnam. Vietnamese government leaders and conservation expert will discuss how Vietnam can improve its wildlife-related policies and legal system for wildlife management and protection, as well as promote demand reduction activities to bring high efficiency for wildlife conservation.
