Workshop for Spiritual Leaders on Community Campaigns to Reduce Demand for Wildlife Products

This two-day workshop is part of the No Ivory No Tiger (NINT) Amulets continuing campaign to reduce demand for ivory and tiger products driven by spiritual beliefs. It aims to strengthen and expand engagement of Buddhist monks and nuns to counter these spiritual beliefs that was initiated under USAID Wildlife Asia through three workshops organized with the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) for more than 80 monks and nuns from 50 temples across Thailand. Participants to this two-day workshop will be monks and nuns (attendees of previous workshops and others) who will submit proposals for community-level campaigns to counter spiritual beliefs about wildlife products.

Second ASEAN Environmental Law Conference

The Second ASEAN Environmental Law Conference aims to bring together ASEAN and non-ASEAN experts to share stories of successes and failures and examine potential legal, policy and community-based actions to transform principles of environmental law into practice. The Conference will also aim to foster networks and collaborative approaches to environmental problem-solving. The event is hosted by the Asian Research Institute for Environmental Law (ARIEL), with support from UNEP, ADB, USAID Reducing Demand for Wildlife, College of Law (Australia), and EarthRights International. Discussion on Thailand Demand Reduction Steering Group 2022 (Online)

Participants from UNDP, GEF, TRAFFIC, WWF, IUCN, Zoological Society of London, WildAid, and other Thailand partner organizations will discuss their demand reduction activities, and the way forward for the group.

CWT Partnership Forum: Towards a New Era of Partnership

USAID’s Regional Development Mission for Asia, and Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) will mark the end of the successful USAID Wildlife Asia initiative through the Counter Wildlife Trafficking Partnership Forum to be held September 21-23, 2021. The virtual event will feature insights from leaders and experts in counter wildlife trafficking; presenting issues, best practices and lessons learned, and the best way forward to stop transnational organized wildlife crime in a post-Covid world. With the theme “Towards a New Era of Partnership,” the forum is a joint collaboration with WWF, the Asian Development Bank, World Bank Global Wildlife Program, Global Environment Facility, and United Nations Development Programme.

3rd International Network of Engaged Buddhists Workshop to Reduce Demand for Wildlife

This workshop is the third and last in a series of workshops that are part of USAID Wildlife Asia’s social mobilization efforts to strengthen the reach of the successful two-phased Spiritual Beliefs campaign (A Good Life is Free of Killing and No Ivory No Tiger Amulets) that the project, in partnership with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) and WildAid, launched in Thailand in 2020 to decrease the demand for ivory and tiger products driven by spiritual beliefs in their power to bring good luck and prevent harm. Two earlier workshops – on October 21, 2020 in Wat Chak Daeng and March 13, 2021 in Phitsanulok province in northern Thailand – engaged 38 temples that are now taking action to help reduce wildlife consumer demand in their communities.

Rapid Reference Guide Provincial Workshop (Virtual)

The participating agencies will include the Office of the Attorney General; Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation; Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division; Customs; and the Department of Special Investigation. Representatives will be drawn from Chiangmai as well as the neighboring provinces of Chiang Rai, Lampoon, and Lampang.

4th Vietnam National Assembly High-Level Dialogue (Postponed to July TBD)

Experts' Dialogue and Review Seminar: Introductory Course on Environmental Law and Governance (Online)

The Thailand Judicial Training Institute (JTI) in collaboration with USAID Wildlife Asia and United Nations Environment Programme Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP ROAP) have jointly developed a judicial curriculum entitled “Introductory Course on Environmental Law and Governance” for the Thai judiciary. The curriculum will be hosted on UNEP’s InforMEA online platform and will be an institutionalized course of JTI. The curriculum’s primary language is Thai, but an English version of the course has also been developed.

2nd Demand Reduction Workshop of International Network of Engaged Buddhists

USAID Wildlife Asia and the International Network of Engaged Buddhists (INEB) will hold the 2nd workshop at Phitsanulok City in northern Thailand. This workshop is part of social mobilization efforts that will use face-to-face channels to expand the reach of USAID Wildlife Asia’s Spiritual Beliefs campaign to decrease demand for ivory and tiger products driven by beliefs in their power to bring good luck and prevent harm. This workshop follows the first successful workshop held on October 21, 2020 and expands the participation of spiritual leaders in additional provinces in Thailand. Approximately 30 monks and nuns from various Buddhist temples in Northern Thailand will participate in this workshop. Participants will discuss wildlife trade and its relation to Buddhist teachings, and will develop an action plan to counter spiritual beliefs about wildlife products and reduce consumption of these products.

Maritime Stakeholders' Workshop on CWT

USAID Wildlife Asia and its partners--the Royal Thai Customs, United Nation Office on Drugs and Crime, TRAFFIC and WWF--are holding a Maritime Stakeholders' Workshop on “Countering wildlife trafficking and other illicit trade through Thai seaports and maritime supply chains”. This meeting will convene representatives from government agencies such as Thai Customs, Port Authority of Thailand, DNP, FD, NED and the shipping and freight sectors to identify wildlife trafficking enablers and vulnerabilities in the port/supply chain systems and operations, and the responses needed to counter them. The workshop will provide the foundation for follow up activities partly supported by specific initiatives and partly driven by public and private sector enterprises. This event is one of a series of Port/Maritime Stakeholder Workshops targeting key countries whose maritime trade chains are known to be exploited by wildlife traffickers.

ASEAN Webinar on Risks of Zoonotic Diseases Transmission from Illegal Wildlife Trade (For AMS Government Officials and Supporting Partners)

ASEAN is holding a webinar on the risks of zoonotic disease transmission from the illegal wildlife trade. Facilitated by USAID Wildlife Asia, the webinar will include the participation of experts led by former CITES Secretary-General John Scanlon. Freeland, Asian Development Bank, World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), and WWF will also provide resource speakers for the webinar. The webinar will be hosted by AWG CITES WE Malaysia Chair via the Bluejeans platform. This collaboration will also produce materials, a policy brief, and recommendations on preventing pandemics from zoonotic diseases.

Roundtable meeting to review the Vietnamese CTOC training package

The Counter Transnational Organized Crime (CTOC) course was identified as a priority during a targeted needs assessment of the Vietnam People's Police Academy (PPA) undertaken by USAID Wildlife Asia. The PPA indicated that it was interested in integrating and institutionalizing relevant CTOC training materials into their curricula. This roundtable meeting with key Vietnamese law enforcement agencies is being conducted to review and discuss how to tailor the CTOC materials to the specific needs of Vietnam’s broader law enforcement community.

Zoohackathon 2020: Coding to End Wildlife Trafficking!

Zoohackathon 2020 is a global competition run by the U.S. Department of State that harnesses the power of technological innovation and the raising of public awareness to combat wildlife trafficking. It brings together coders, university students, wildlife conservation experts, zoos, and other academic and nongovernmental organizations to develop wire-frame/demo technology solution ideas over 2.5 days.  We aim to turn these solution ideas into real-world technologies that can help combat wildlife trafficking into the future.  In prior years, this competition was held in-person, but as COVID-19 has made that infeasible for 2020, we have developed the Virtual Global Zoohackathon 2020.
